Our Connections to the Outside World
The only way in or out of Kugaaruk is by air, or by snowmobile. First Air takes us to Yellowknife from where we can drive or connect to flights going anyplace in the world.
Everything comes into our town by air or by ship. The ships can only get into our harbour during August and September when the Arctic ice has melted. Coast Guard ships such as the Terry Fox and the Henry Larsen spend a whole week anchored offshore of Pelly Bay unloading food, fuel, school supplies, furniture, and the building materials needed to construct new homes and buildings.
The highlight of our year is the arrival of the ship in September. |

When the Arctic ice is too thick for ships, the Henry Larsen comes to save the day. |
