The fishing is unbelievable

Nunavut has some of the best fishing in the world, and Kugaaruk has some of the best fishing in Nunavut.  We catch fish with hook and line, with rod and reel, but we also fish the traditional way , as well.  In the first photo, Makabe and Gilbert Nartok are spearing char at a fish weir on the Kellet River, about 15 kilometers from town.  The fish get trapped in the weirs, and we stab the char with our long kakiavaks.

When the rivers freeze over, our fishermen drill holes through the ice (some fishing holes may be as deep as three metres!!).  The men watch patiently for the fish to swim by, and then they quickly spear the big fish.  Nobody complains about the cold.
