The Barge Really Delivers
The Arctic Ocean is covered with a thick coat of ice (about 10 feet) for ten months of the year. Because of that, all of the large and heavy supplies and materials that cannot come by plane are brought in by barge during the short summer. The two stores order in some of their "heavy" groceries such as flour, and local residents can have some of their groceries delivered the same way. Buying in bulk means buying at a much reduced price. Groceries, ski - doos, 4-wheel ATV's, building materials, furniture, etc come in the large crates you see in the picture below.
